how to you build consistency?

I'm focused on online game cause it just seems like an awesome thing to learn and it's a good way to work on text game. My problem is consistency. Sometimes i'll do good and get numbers/dates. Other times I just say gay shit or I only message a couple times then no response. How do I get more consistent success? Is it just more practice?
