I thought his process of connecting the dots and letting information settle in, and applying knowledge from one area to another, was super similar to learning game. Also, just the fact he even thought he was capable of coming up with a solution is imo the main reason why he figured this out. In the end his discovery is pretty damn simple, but what made it work was the simple certainty and motivation to keep going.
