Alcohol and it's effects on Testosterone, Fat Loss, Immune Functioning and Protein Synthesis
From all my research looking into alcohol and it's effects, it appers that moderate drinking (3-4 drinks) is not problematic at all. There's even an ongoing debate whether or not alcohol calories matter because replacing carb or fat calories with alcohol calories results in weight loss and adding alcohol calories to a maintenance calorie diet doesn't lead to the expected weight gain. What is also really fascnating is that moderate alcohol consumption isn't associated with a massive drop in testosterone. In fact, some studies in men found an increase in testosterone after a low dose of alcohol (4 drinks for a 80kg man). Futhermore, the only way you can inhibit protien synthesis with alcohol is to have a heavy amount of alcohol following a workout. Finally, a moderate amount of alcohol actually has immune boositng benefits.
I've been going out 3 nights per week and drinking 3-4 drinks on each of those nights. I've gotten leaner, stronger and more muscular. Drinking has not effected my training or fat loss whatsovever. That said, this would clearly not be the case if I was drinking 6-10 drinks per night.
1. Moderate Alcohol Consumption and the Immune System
3. A Low Dose of Alcohol Increases Testosterone
4. Drinkings have lower body fat and same lean mass as non drinkers
Fucking A. This is crazy
I knew drinking 5-7 nights a week was not THAT bad of me. At least, as bad as most community guys make it out to be. I genuinely enjoy beer, cocktails, and shots. Look at guys like Jeffy, Alexander, and most naturals (who usually drink). Do you think they give a fuck about how this is affecting their health and game? Probably not, because they're too busy having fun. Half the time I'm out I have way more fun drinking with my homies than value scanning the bar like a hawk for the next girl I can pick up.
On that same note, I also work out 4-5 days a week, adhere to a strict diet, and have 10-12% bf year round. It's all about discipline and prioritizing. Good read, thanks for this.
Also, one of those studies examines bf % between social drinkers vs. ALCOHOLICS lol.
Of cours the alcoholics, on average, have lower bf %. They generally will tend to eat less because they are almost always in a perpetual hangover state when they're not drinking. Less caloric intake, more lean mass, less bf %.
Have you looked into the effects of pot at all?
G-Money
The point of that study was to show that even in heavy alcoholics they didn't see a reduciton in lean mass. If you pick up any bodybuilding magazine you are led to beleive that after 2 drinks you'll start slabbing on fat and catobolizing muscle tissue.
Meow, I haven't really looked into weed but it appears that marijuana is a homeostasis agent. So it's not problematic if you're just trying to maintain your shape, but if you're trying to undergo a serios fat loss or muscle building program, smoking weed a few times per week will be like driving with the parking break on. This is because smoking weed appears to supress acute changes.
When smoking weed, testosterone appears to decline to about 66% of baselines levels and it has been shown to acutely increase cortisol levels. Further, weed appears to have properties of being an Alpha-2 agonist, and thus may help preserve fat mass while undergoing dietiing.
So my recommendation would be to limit weed to a couple times per month max if you're working towards a body composition goal.

i know. I'm just including my interpretation as to why that may be true.
Shit.
I've not heard of this before? Sauce?

Which part?
The fucking weed part, bro. Derp
hahah I know.... But like it's effects on testosterone, cortisol or fat preservation?
Here is a study showing an acute increase in cotisol and slight drop in test - http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/3016764
Another one showing that smoking marijuana inhibits testosterone and at-least 24 hours are needed for test to return to baseline levels - http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6316036
Here's the study showing that weed activates the alpha 2 receptor that can inhibit fat burning - http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20002104
Also another one showing marijuna stimulating fatty acid synthesis and contributing to diet induced obesity - http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15864349
