Ash and Aluminum.. And Rust - True detective
Just been talking about true detective with some friends, they are just getting into it. We talked about the scene when Rust first goes into the scene of the sadistic ritualistic murder and mentions the taste of aluminum and ash in the air. Later on in the timeline he is seen smoking and drinking tallboy cans. He went from a well dressed responsible family man to a rough, ungroomed drinker and smoker. WIth nothing left in his life except an irrational drive to solve the case he falls into a world filled with smoke that kills him and canned beer which dulls the dark reality around him and is taken over by it.
The transition is like how the metal on my fucking car has rusted over the years due to the harsh winters here and neglect of the previous owner to care for it.
On my walk home I had to stop at the railway for some trains to pass. Sitting there idling my mind began to wonder if Rust decided to start smoking and drinking. Everything he does is so calculated, he must've conciously decided to start these "bad habits." Pushed from the cliff of comfort he at some point decided that he was going to stop flailing and start swan diving, smoking and drinking the whole way down.
#mcconaissance
Yeah there was definitely a conscious decision on his part. To dampen his thoughts and drives.
Notice when he drinked early in the timeline. At first cause he couldn't deal with the anniversary of losing his daughter along with the added stress of being out with others.. Later only when he needed some liquid courage before heading into a suicide mission in the ghetto. Even later to dampen his thoughts when shit got real, and rust made it a point to drink and smoke in front of the present day detectives so they thought he was off the case.
symbolism runs deep in this show
Wasn't he stone cold sober for the mission in the ghetto? I think even the heroin he'd shot up earlier he was off of?
No he drank and smoked in front of the detectives because that's what he "does on Wednesdays." Lol
^^lol. they allude to him having the detectives wrapped around his finger (which he does) and thought the smokes and drinks were apart of that. Regardless such as badass scene.
The ghetto scene was presumably sober cause motherfucker was on point. But when he was gearing up - whisk out the bottle
Really? I'll have to watch that episode again. Episode 4 or 5
He didn't have them "wrapped around his finger" because he did not give one fuck if they were or not. That's a misunderstood beta interpretation. I would expect them to form that. He wasn't trying to tool them he was simply "being". By staying on his path, he was simply staying ahead of theirs as they were trying to figure out his. Not that that is even that big of a deal that's part of their job description. He fucking knew he was innocent. Why do anything else but stay on his path. His path being what he'd given himself to, what inspired and drove him to keep going (nothing compares), which was to solve this case and right some of these wrongs. He was a "bad man" keeping evil men out. It was part of his calling
Gawd damn nice write up. I should start a thread about the women in the show of both Rust and Marty, discussion would be sick
and yeah, i think it was the night before that mission? Or they did have a few in them during that scene like a ww1 soldier about to go over the top. Nahh he must've been sober, either way when Marty went over to rusts place his was playing with his guns and they both indulged.
