Awesome Video - Paul Vunak Jeet Kune Do Street Fighting Series
I used to train JKD for 4 years throughout highschool. This is an awesome video that shows the effectivness and fluidity of it. Definitely going to have to start training again, I definitely feel like there's a void and fighting fills it. Lifting and fucking isn't enough, fighting is amazing.
This is a pretty old school video but the content is fucking awesome. Paul Vunak is an absolute bad ass, trained the navy seals for many years and is definitely one of the top teachers for street fights.
Oh sweet thx. I'm currently training in Kali/JKD as well as boxing. And I'm still practicing my kicks in fact I'm about to start
The groin slap fake to straight blast is probably a madly effective way to catch your opponenet. Even a veteran boxer. Check it out, starts at 32 minutes.
This is awesome, he's got a sweet sway in his stance. Crazy 90's lol. Tried to do somethin like this in my first fight in high school, I was a short dude- no forward pressure meant a hammer came down on my forehead. HAH. Still got the scar.
Did a little wing chun, hapkido for a couple years. Been looking for a decent JKD spot at home (always done some kind of martial art, just boxing atm, starting amateurs next week, woot!). Got to keep my traditional boxing in check and apply it to some of the other forms. Hapkido was cool for that, JKD would probably gel better.
Curious though bateman, my ears spiked on the call when you mentioned your MMA. Don't you find the mass from pushing the weights slows you down? Or do you push for speed and power moreso?

That's a very old school way of thinking. But no, it doesn't slow me down.
That said, I train for maximum strength gain. So I have very high amounts of relative strength. Meaning, I have incredible strength/power in relation to my bodyweight. I can do 54" box jumps, muscle ups, one arm pull ups. This strength/mass only makes my techniques more explosive and effective.
The other point is that size is generally an asset in a fight situation. This is why they have weight divisions. So a patrick bateman at 165 lbs is going to be at a disadvantage against a bateman at 185 lbs.
That's interesting dude. My muskles actually do slow me down a bit I'm working on getting a faster jab. You'll have to 'splain that to me I like it!!
Didn't used to think that way, but I didn't exactly optimize my training for boxing or combat when I was lifting regularly (looked at some of Ross Enamaits' stuff subsequently, learned a bit)
Used to train for the same though, powerlifted, strengthtraining mainly. When I say lifting I'm referring to lifting free weights; squats, deadlifts yadda yadda. I've always placed Bodyweight, Plyometrics, etc. in a different compartment-
Saying that, though my mass has dropped- my explosive power has progressed, focusing on boxing has (obviously) got me sharper in the ring. Led me to believing the mass that I gained lifting I couldn't work with as well. I suppose a fighter has to train by fighting, lifting's a supplement.
A weight disadvantage is just as dangerous as a speed disadvantage, I find. But I see where you're coming from.

No that's definitely a consequence of the fact you're actively training in boxing that'll always make you sharper and faster.
Yeah I definitely get that. I think I just need to figure out the balance.
Oooh MW. Nice. Fast jab's all in relaxing the arm and whipping it out there.
I find when you get a nice rotation in the shoulder, you can bring the elbow up and over, lock it out for a split second and get that nice snap at the end of the shot. I like to push my shoulder forward a little bit, takes the stress off the elbow joint and gives me a bit of leverage to pull back my jab.
Hm interesting use of the elbow. Ok I just tried that out on my BOB that's making a definite difference.
Yeah im training muay thai right now, its amazing. Had my first fight a week ago.
I used to lift alot but i have improved faster since i reduced lifting and focused more on training. I still lift to avoid injuries and muscle imbalance though. I dont know if muscle mass slows you down, but it definitly makes you fatigue faster.

Basically, you want to gain as much horse power without adding a lot of weight. This is what makes you faster, more effecient and explosive. Most weight training is geared at adding muscle size without a profound increase in strength.
My suggestion would be to hone your training just on getting stronger. The key here is just doing about 2 sets with long rest periods and 4-8 reps per set. You'll still gain muscle, but it will come with a fuck ton of strength. This is because 2 sets is not a lot of volume to trigger hypertrophy. The level of fatigue will be minimal. Yet, you'll promote awesome strength gains if you focus on adding weight or reps each workout.
For legs, your best bet is to use a submaximal weight you can do for 8-12 reps, and just bust out sets of 2-3 explosive reps. This will allow you to build more power and speed, without triggering any additional muscle size.
I've never lost speed from building strength/muscle. I'm as quick as I was at 140 lbs (I'm 185 now).
Oh shit yeah! I remember taking some notes from Elliott Hulse speaking similarly on the process you outline here.
I'd always done some form of a 5x5 workout when I've lifted. 5 sets came with a ton of mass gain- and it was technically training for strength. Incremental weight increase each exercise.
So 2 sets is the sweet spot. Nice.
Lost me at the legs though. So your load is, let's say 50-60% max. and you're busting out 2-3 reps explosively- still for 2 sets same way right?
We've just got a squat rack at one of my boxing gyms, so I intend to test out this stuff. Love boxing, but I miss lifting that bar.
This was cool to watch.
I just got myself a heavy bag for home, gonna start watching some videos online and get some basics down.
It's interesting to read back over this, I forgot how far I'd regressed in my boxing skills and size/speed after injuries and surgeries. But yeah my hands are quite sharp at this point in fact I'm trying to help Patrick.Bateman out with his boxing 'cuz it still sucks. Lol
.
Injuries from training martial arts or unrelated hijinks?
Training weights again and going reeeall slow because my shoulders started clicking.
Gotta get back to boxing asap, want to throw some BJJ in there as well. I'm a smaller dude, really helps to have ground game against larger opponents
Yep college wrestling and mma while I was in the military. But pretty sure it was high school swimming that originally did me in
Damn.
Been meaning to get ultrasound on my shoulders. Would hate to lose size and/or function
From my experience the key is to err on the side of not pushing my body TOO hard and possibly sacrificing a session here and there on maintenanace rather than growth
To be clear I don't have time to actually hit the gym currently so I've been working out from home using a 50lb weighted vest, example: https://www.amazon.com/RUNmax-RUNFast-RM_20-Weighted-Vest/dp/B015EUKKMS/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1539741811&sr=8-3&keywords=weighted+vest And focusing on compound movements instead of isolating muscles. So one session might consist of different styles of pull ups while wearing the vest. Throw in push ups, squats, dips etc..also go for runs wearing it too
Not optimal for body building and progress is definitley slower but I can tell it's been kinder on my joints. My body is overall growing in a more balanced way as well. Leveling up all around rather than one muscle group at a time. Also I'm pretty sure my bone density has gone up. Just walking around with that thing a month ago was exhausting, now my body supports it quite easily.
hmm...curious what P.B. does for recovery. Several things I want to try including cryotherapy
I have a membership at one of the float tank centres here in Toronto. Go quite regularly and I can attest to how effectively those things release muscular tension. Might be as good as a massage actually. I do 2 hour sessions and usually leave taller because of how relaxed my spine gets lol!
Epsom salt/magnesium baths.. old school tech for the modern warrior
Yep, the water in the float tanks is super dense with epsom salts/magnesium
Dude try this. Amazing joint remedy is more movement.
One of the best things to try for inflamation and joint healing is curcumin. But look for a micellar form. The powder is hard to absorb by the body. You can check out the novaSol version or others.
I didn't realize hanging was such a cure for shoulder injuries. Restoring the "outside stretch" parameter. That's crazy
Been following ido for years now. He’s a true pioneer in this industry. Goes above and beyond fitness - And he can do all kinds of insane shit with his body.
He even has stuff on back and knee pain as well as bulletproofing ankles.
Oh and he’s Conor Mcgregors trainer
Oh and he’s Conor Mcgregors trainer
What's he train Mcgregor in?
I honestly have no fucking idea lol - The guy is a self-proclaimed "movement" expert and refuses to be called anything else. He's all over McGregor's instagram and McGregor is all over Ido's instagram.
The dude apparently spent his life seeking trainers in various disciplines so he can be better at moving. He's like Goku except much more pretentious.LULZ
Edit:
I'm making him sound like a quack. He isn't anything of the sort. He is totally an asshole though.
Interesting. Yeah I already feel more stability from doing some of his hanging stuff
