How did you guys choose what career you went into?
Hey boys, its about that time in my life where I need to figure out what career path I want to take and what I want my major to be in college. It's defintely some overwhelming stuff, but i'm trying to be proactive here and figure out what i'm interested in before it's too late.
I was thinking something medical such as a PT and a PA, but i'm also starting to think I should do some sort of management or marketing now that i'm developing some high level social skills. I'm trying to take more of creative approach for now because i'm actually clueless about works best with me, so i'm open to all suggestions. Any advice?
I would pursue internet marketing on the side and use college for something like engineering.
Study whatever gets your dick the hardest.......
And what MW said.... There's a huge potential to build an incredible business, income and lifestyle with the internet. I dropped out of university after first year to start personal training, which led to building a high traffic fitness blog and doing affiliate marketing. Then I started to create my own fitness courses online and everything really took off. I work from wherever I want, set my own schedule, get to help tons of people with their fitness goals and I have a huge potential for growing my income. This is definitely the ultimate career path in my opinion. It's cool because really anything that your passionate about you can turn into an online business.
I was mentored by Rusty Moore from Fitnessblackbook.com a couple years ago. He's making like high six figures each year from a fitness blog. The guy is super smart.
Well said...I'm an engineering major just getting into online marketing now. I'm still trying to figure out if I want to buy websites or make them from scratch (thoughts Manwhore?). I have two years of college left, my ultimate goal being to get to a point where passive income from online marketing is enough to live off. Basically my plan is to get a major in something really safe where I'll always have a job if I NEED one, but I want to do my own thing, travel the world, live it up, etc. just make the most out of the one life I get. Entreprenuer>busting your ass for someone else, any day.
Also, read the 4-Hour Work Week if you're at all interesting in traveling, starting your own business...basically not working your life away and falling into the trap that society leads most people to fall into. There's a free PDF if you Google it.
What do you mean when you say "buy websites"?
As in buy websites that already exist (via Flippa or something similar) that are making money, but you think you could make them more profitable. The idea is to make the site more profitable (this can be as simple as changing the Adsense layout) and either hold it for a while and just collect the checks, or increase the revenue so much that you can flip the site for massive profits in the short term. I like the idea of starting from scratch if even just for the challenge of it, but there can be a lot of merit to taking someone else's good idea and making it great.
Making a site more profitable than it already is is a LOT of work. Who's trying to say something like that is feasible for guys just starting out in IM?
Thoughts on healthcare management? This seems to be a great career because the medical business doesn't fluctuate much, and it only requires a four year degree.
So you would be a healthcare receptionist/secretary?
So you would be a healthcare receptionist/secretary?
kinda, but on a bigger scale. It would be management for certain offices or even an entire hospital. I would do scheduling, keep things up to publc health standards, and much more.
I was talking with a PT, he told me the current 7 year doctoral degree is too excessive (10 years ago you could become a PT with an undergrad degree). He said that he's got a few buddies in healthcare management, both making over 200k a year.
What's the entry-level job for this sort of thing? Do you have to do 3 yrs of receptionist work?

yes, the entry level jobs arent the greatest. It would be receptionalist/secretary work, but I have the ability to climb the ladder and do bigger things.
The only issue is, in this economy a lot of the nurses/PA's/PT's are taking on the job themselves... My mom's actually a PT and she said that she did healthcare management for some time even though she had no degree in the field.

exactly. I'd rather work my dick off in college and get a degree that allows for a good entry level job. I did some research,I can become a PA in less than 6 years, and make at least 70,000 straight outta school. Not a bad deal, considering I'm only gonna have around 30,000 in student loans if I attend a state university.
Get a degree in finance/accounting/math. Basically anything with math. Be an audit / accountant. Make bank. Go back for mba. Kill it.
Six years is a long time and 70k is chump change for that amount of school. Audit makes 50k entry level at big 4 firm. Or a consultant.

i'm terrible at math. It's just not my thing.
Computer science kills it. My bud makes 6 figures and hes only been out of college for 3 yrs? Obviously putting in hella OT but thats where the big bucks come in and simply comes with the territory of making six figures.
Yeah Computer Science is an amazing gig. I thought about going back for electric engineering, so I can help rebuild the world after World War Z, but Computer Science has that and machinery/hardware. You're still in high school meowcake, I'd talk to some people about computer science.
I'll take a look at computer engineering, thanks for all the advice boys
