Very common actually, it's not just dating but its a lifestyle fail that I have issues with as well. I don't think this means you gotta be the loudest guy in the room or trying to 'out alpha' everyone else, but more like you bring it out when it needs to be brought out. Most guys mess this part up or simply don't even have that 'alpha' side to them.

I would say the first thing to master is vocal projection. Then from there it's other body language and awareness things.

It starts with understanding the mission and what needs to get done. If you don't know what your goal is, you can't formulate a plan, so you have nowhere to go. Things like vocal projection are obviously important, but they help you do it, they're not the crux of leading. 

What do you do when a girl starts trying to lead? I approached some chicks and started making out with one, but later she grabbed my tightly and started trying to dictate lol. Hah! Yeah even if it's not your looks you still have to "masculinize" the interaction when you draw girls and they open you. I would consider myself pretty average but from time to time I still get opened based on.. Whatever reason (height, the odd time I look put together). A chicks way of picking up is just to open. I recall once I was talking to two dudes and a tiny cute German kinda walked into our group looking at me. Once I realized she didn't know either of two dudes I pulled her hand in, held her close while talking her ear off. I didn't pull her that night but it went down the next week. point is even when girls open you, you still have to man up and lead/take responsibility for the interaction.

Protip: if a girl opens you in this way it's a VERY good ioi and you can probably ramp things up pretty quickly if you please. This is the essence of my "festival" game
