My issue was I never had a tape measure or ruler laying around, not to mention those are rigid measuring devices unlike the more ideal soft measuring tape they use for measuring suit sizes etc. So instead I would take a piece of paper where I knew the approximate dimensions (8.5 x 11) and then fold it and/or draw lines and approximate.
