Neuroscientist explains the physiology of "Getting in the zone" or "into state" and how to control it
Some cliff notes, boo? Maybe some particular time points to watch?
I'll summarize.
Its basically about how people aren't in control of their performance or behavior because they don't understand how to control their
Thinking
Feelings
Emotions
Physiology
In part 1 he takes the volunteer and hooks him up to the machine that shows his heart rate and an average BPM, and shows how his physiology changes under pressure. Your frontal lobe actually shuts down and your average BPM becomes erratic. Basically fight or flight mode. The kid couldn't even do basic math.
Then in part two he makes the volunteer regulate his breathing and shows how his physiology becomes coherent. Under those circumstances you're better able to perform.
If anything watch part 2 starting at 21 minutes.
I thought this was really interesting because it's not mumbo jumbo "Get into state or "go to your happy place" nonsense. He actually demonstrates the effect on his projector so you can literally see what's going on. I thought this was super awesome.
How does he put the guy under pressure? When does it start showing that
Part 1 at about 15:30
Does he make him pick up hotdogs with his butt
He tried, but the guy had a prehensile penis, so he had to dump astroglide on it to make it harder
Yeah and give the audience barf buckets

The main lesson about the breathing was that you must do it in steady incrimants. We've heard about controlling breathing left and right, but this guy claims that it doesn't matter if your breathing is relaxed or fast paced...you will remain coherent as long as you focus on a simply ratio for seconds breathing in and seconds breathing out. He also suggest breathing through the chest because he claims it produces the most energy, but I don't fully agree with that :(
Holy cow this is great.
Definitely worth the entire watch.
