Presence and retaining lecture material

So I'm experimenting a lot with study habits and learning information because I want to be as efficient as possible. I've been experimenting with being extremely present during lectures and keeping my notes brief. I am focusing on the teachers words and expressions opposed to the power points themselves. Later on I hit up the book and the online powerpoint and add details to my notes. Seems to work okay so far.
Has anyone found any studies or have personal experience with active presence and retaining information and learning? Manwhore I know you are knowledgable with cognitive sciences.
