Vocal Test - How Do I Sound?
After returning abroad for sometime and hanging around wayy too many travelers and surfer dudes, I feel like their vocal patterns rubbed off on me...actually, I'm being paranoid cause I watched one of MW's videos recently about tonality and projection. In it, he brings up the skater/surfer voice and I had a weird epiphony.
I FELT LIKE THAT WAS ME!
I didn't have this problem before with the training program. However, its been a while since and I'm just checking myself to make sure I didnt develop this issue...could just be in my head.
Haven't had any complaints so far, except for two girls saying I sounded like a "traveler" or a "stoner"....but that was cause I was jetlagged talking to them and didn't have an expressive range.
Normally, when talking to people, I range my voice for added effect of enthusiasm, sexyness, or humor...but maybe I haven't been doing it to the effect I think.
Anywho, please put on some headphones and literally, hear me out. I'm putting up an audio.
In the audio, I'm purposefully only saying a few phrases again and again and trying them out different ways to see if this vocal thing is in my head. I'm also talking to myself so excuse the purposeful lack of expression. My goal is to FIRST put up an audio of my voice very baseline, day to day talk...depending on how this goes, I'll put up another focusing on an upward threshold and another focusing on a lower threshold.
Excuse the cuts!
Can't view Jihadi baby
MW always told me I was too surfer!! lol lets straighten dis shit out.
Are you viewing on mobile?
Cause the forum never plays vids or audio for me through phone
Works on the computer and its public on my youtube channel
All goodie now
Sounds pretty darn sexy to me man. I can see how you could stray off and go stoner/surfer but it's not very noticable. I am way more mahalo then you, it needs work. You're very cognizant of your pauses and breathes, you reminded me to work on that too :)
I'll record something tomorrow in the car and post her up. This is fun.
That's refreshing to hear lol! Thanks pussy cat!
Yes man DO IT!!!
Sounds surfer/beach ish to me. Expressive, postive, grounded. Chill, laid back.
Overall pretty solid. But talking into a mic and talking to a girl are pretty different.
We could give a lot of good feedback if you have a recording if yourself in set.
Thanks deeedeee :)
True balls to that. I was just freaking out recently and wanted to make sure I wasn't on the other end of the spectrum from where I was before.
Ya I was planning on hitting you guys up with one of those too. You know a good way to subtly record vocals in a set? I feel like using your phone is counterintuitive.
Anyone?
Feelin better though cause I'm not "trying" to put on this voice like a lot of chode guys might do to feel more masculine. Even mentioned it in the beginning that this is my baseline voice. It comes natural thanks to the training.
Do you have a recording from before your training?
What training did you do?
Haven't tried using the iphone but feel like it would pick up ALOT of background noise. Especially in a bar or club. You think it wouldn't?

Nah don't have any audio :/
(will insert video later, need to edit something)

There's always daygame.
Nice man, im jealous. How did you train your voice? I constantly have to repeat myself to people, gotta fix this :)

Thanks for the kind words scout!
The coaching program MW offers is what I did. Cheaper than any bootcamp, personalized to you, and its thorough!
Leadscout wtf we never did the vocal training?
Guys I've been on my phone the last couple days haven't been able to hear the audios.
Nop, not yet. I did some Roger Love tho...
I think it sounds sexy too lol.
I have this problem of being too laid back and kind of having the attitude "not giving a fuck" so i probably sound kind of flat. Thanks for reminding me. Will look into roger love aswell :)
Great video by manwhore here
Dude thats the video that tripped me out and compelled me to write and test!!
thanks pap!!
Honestly dude I really don't think you're having vocal problems. You're one of the rare guys I didn't have to do much vocal tweaking with.
O.o oh
Anybody listen yet? My analysis is that my speech patterns are too predictable. I used to be complete monotone but now I can be charasmatic, but it is the SAME type of range every time. I also need to get rid of filler words!
bro it's set as private you need to change it to listed
Not sure what surfer/scater voice is but yours sounds damn good to me lol.
Sounds like you're vocal chords are relaxed and its your natural voice coming out.
No 'trying hard to project' type voice comin out which is what I have sometimes
:) thx dashi...man you guys are too good to me *sniffle
You sound like that when you speak withyour friends?
Meow's seems a bit unnatural. I think he's working on emotional variance, but it isn't fully developed yet so it's a bit off right now.
I'd like to see it again, but dial back the emotional variance 2 points from the last vid, but 2 more points above your natural inclination to emotional varience.
I think this is great example of emotional variance. https://youtu.be/O8c-ijxS8CY?t=17m23s . See if you can be more like that.
Seems like you're trying to add an emotional connotation to what you're saying, rather that actually feeling the emotion and letting it express through.
Come to think of it, DaddyJihad didn't really do that much, he said 'test' a bunch times, I'd like to see him do an improvised monolouge, and demonstrate some emotional variance.
Yes I am absolutely pushing the emotional variance. I used to be flat line as FUCK so it's a skill I am developing, and forcing. Thanks for the listen guys great advice!
You sound like that when you speak withyour friends?
No probably a notch or two down. I push the emotional content when I train its a big time weak point.
Lol it sounds forced because as DeChee said you aren't actually feeling those emotions but still trying to sound cool. I get it it's hard to actually feel those emotions when talking to oneself/the microphone but i think you need to imagine you're telling something cool and then project it, rather than just talking and trying to modulate the tonality. Attitude plays a big role
Would be interesting to hear your "natural talk".

Ask and you shall receive my nig.
Give me a topic/word/phrase and I'll riff and create something...probably 5-10min long :D

Good points man i'll post another one soon
Thread challenge:
Record yourself talking with your phone in live natural conversation, prefferably with a girl.
Ill do it too.
Shikabawow thats sexy. Hell ya challenge accepted
You there. answer your PMs lol.
First ten seconds is great then after that it starts to sound a bit forced and unnatural. But the main problem is your rather monotonous tonal cadence. Need to fix that
I have some infield recording for you guys :)

ok, . . phones!
haha that was great. Remained masculine and grounded throughout the emotional variance. Meow's otoh delved into sort of a gay accent at times.
Another difference between jihad and Meow is varience in the range. Meow seemed to go obviously on and off with adding the emotion, like 0 to 10. Jihad would be like 0, 5, 2, 7, 10, 1, 3. There were areas were it was subtle; he added just the right amount.
There's stuff you could improve upon, but you're in the top 5% in terms of voices already. Seems to me your voice will only help you, never hurt you.
What's your self analysis of your voice? Is there stuff you still feel like you need to work on?
Thank you thank you that's really nice of you to say.
Yup definitely stuff I want to work on. A lot of times, I don't enunciate words as well as they could be and it ends up rolling so fast off my tongue that people can't even understand. I'm also working on making a bigger impact with volume. Going through the roof with certain phrases or words and then seeping through the floor with whispers.
I also took a public speaking class a while back and ^the shit I just mentioned was exactly what my professor told me to work on.
Holy fuck!!! I think Jihad just gave me a boner
Jihad what'd your public speaking course/teacher have you work on that was different or more than the vocal training I put you through?
As far as your speaking clip I thought you tonality was very good, but your flow 'n such, at least compared to what you did in my training program, was pretty mediocre. I only heard the first bitty part of it though.
My public speaking class was done before I started training with you. We never did vocal drills...only warmups. Those involved saying weird words and tongue twisters to get our mouths flowing and to develop proper enunciation. Then, we'd do improv exercises to get us out of our heads..although no one, probably not even the professor knew what that term meant. He just said to "warmup"
Ya it picks up towards the middle. The flow was lackluster cause I actually woke up, checked the forum, and immediately busted out my phone lol. I think I was putting a lot of expectations on myself to hit all the right cadences and tonalities when talking so the actual 'content' slowed down.
Very different in set though...hmm infield footage coming soon!
After recording that today I have a much better idea of the direction I want to go in. I was doing this forceful emotion thing where I fluctuated tones super fast sometimes and it felt so try hard and stupid. What I did today felt sustainable and natural, a flow that I could use with anybody.

Give this a listen fellas. I trashed the infield because quite honestly it sucked, so I did a free association on snowdays instead. I tried not to force anything and stay pretty natural, but towards the halfway mark I really started find my flow and actually understand how emotional variance works. I am relieved that I am starting to understand what I was doing wrong! Jihad's post helped out a lot too.
If you're crunched for time it gets better around 2:12 and on.
3:55 is some funny dirty talk type diologue too
wow much better than the last. Was too flatlined in areas where i was expecting more emotion. "that sucked" .. . "That SUCKED".
Are you feeling the different emotions, but it's not expressing through? Or are you not feeling the emotions in the first place?
There's more to vocal than just tonality shifting.
Try this, get an acting monolouge. Speak it, record it, listen to it, figure out what to improve upon, speak it again.
Thanks for the listen! I will give the acting monologue a try.
I think it's a matter of actually feeling the emotions. I try to use the tonality to influence my emotions and that's backwards.
